The Nature of the Atonement

The history  of the doctrine of the Atonement is one of the most complex strands in historical theology. Much of the difficulty lies in the subtle change of usage and meaning of words over the centuries. Fr Stephen Freeman has a lucid and relatively simple post here that helps explain the heart of the contemporary debate without getting hung up on some of the older flavors of the debate that are so bound with philosophical systems  that no one holds any longer.
